In 1989 at the end of four years studying religions and languages at the School of Oriental and African Studies. I took Bates Method lessons with Peter Mansfield, and my eyesight (over minus five dioptres of short-sightedness in each eye) improved immediately. I soon realised that I could understand my vision improvement only in the light of the sacred traditions I had been studying. Unexpectedly, but later making perfect sense, many ancient spiritual practices helped my eyesight. After qualifying as a Bates Teacher in 1993, this path of understanding and practice of natural vision improvement has been continuous.

After nearly ten years of needing to wear glasses due to short-sightedness, I discovered the Bates Method. Within weeks I’d improved my vision to 20:20. To see clearly again was so exciting, such a wonderful revelation- that in 2003 I began training become a teacher so that I could share this amazing method with others.
Since then, I’ve also attended workshops/courses by renowned vision teachers Leo Angart and Meir Schneider .
When I recently became far-sighted, I quickly improved my vision using the Bates Method. After this personal experience of fixing my own long-sightedness, I enjoy teaching these wonderful techniques even more!
With many years’ experience teaching all age groups from young children to octogenarians, I can help with a broad spectrum of visual challenges including: short/long-sightedness, squints, astigmatism, eye strain, oversensitivity to light, dry eyes, glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration, retinal pathologies and complications following eye surgery.
It’s a joy to teach such a gentle, fun and effective method- as one client puts it (my dentist!): “The Bates Method has been a revelation...the results are astonishing”.

My Bates teaching is broadly 'classical' in the sense that I use the procedures described by Dr Bates in his books and journals.
I am also trained and experienced in the Alexander Technique, so use as an important reference point. I integrate insights from a wide range of therapeutic sources, as well as visual techniques devised by myself and others in the spirit of Dr. Bates.
I have been a working musician and music teacher for the past 40 years, having studied music at York University under Wilfred Mellers.
My interest in the Bates Method developed after I noticed changes in my eyesight following my first series of lessons in the Alexander Technique circa 1982.
I learned the method from Anthony Attenborough, Michael Ronan, Evelyn Sage and Olive Scarlett.
I had glasses prescribed for me at about the age of four or five. I hated them and would not want to wear them most of the time. They just magnified things and caused eye strain. I managed to get by and just accepted that I could not see like others even with the glasses. When I was about eighteen I failed my driving test because I could not read the number plate test and had my licence taken away. I came across the Bates Method at that time through a couple of books given to me but even though I did the exercises nothing seemed to improve.
It was years later after training to become an Alexander Teacher that I went to train with Miss Sage to become a Bates Teacher. I had previously had lessons with her and worked with some other Bates Teachers but on completion of my Alexander Training I was ready to take the next step. Then things began to change for me as I began to realise it was not just about exercises. My vision had been fairly flat but now I was beginning to see more in depth. She also taught me how to see colours and so much more.
I qualified with her in 1990 and then spent another two years working with her in her clinic.
Since then I have worked as an Alexander Teacher, Bates Teacher and learning and working with other skills such as NLP, Bach Flower Remedies and Tony Buzan's work. If it is natural and healthy and works I will use it.
I love to see pupils discover things about themselves and their eyesight and make improvements. It is so encouraging to see them grow as people and become more relaxed through the method.
I teach one to one or a variation such as family or partner, workshops, etc.

Julia Galvin - member of the Bates Association for Vision Education since 1997.
I discovered Bates method in 1994 when I went to a lecture by Peter Mansfield in Brighton UK.
He described how glasses only prop up bad vision and don't encourage good vision habits. There's a lot you can do to help your eyes to be healthy and to focus better!
I'm still excited by Bates method. I hardly ever use glasses. Without them I can use a computer and read street signs - not all the time, but often enough to be practical.
Plus, I know when I am straining my eyes, and what to do about it.
It was after working as an interior designer for 20 years that I began having difficulty in reading, drawing and then soon afterwards with TV and driving. This is known as ‘old age sight’ or presbyopia. I disliked wearing glasses so I avoided them as much as possible. A few years later, due to challenging life issues, I was diagnosed with vitreous detachment. It was around this time that I was lucky enough to come across the Bates Method. The Bates Method and its philosophy has not only improved my vision but has also transformed my life. So I decided to train as a Bates teacher to share this wonderful experience with other people.
I completed my training in 2007 at the London College of Vision Education. Working alongside an ophthalmic surgeon in Iran shortly after I qualified, I was given very valuable feedback from the patients with various eye conditions. The experience helped me to realise how significantly the power of the mind impacts on vision and the whole body. Since then, I have helped many clients of different ages and eye conditions including short sight, long sight, presbyopia, astigmatism, squint, lazy eye etc.). I also do head and eye massage. I love my profession and get enormous satisfaction from hearing the feedback from my clients!
